I am certain that Gok Wan, the presenter of “How to look good naked” is a very warm, compassionate man and I like his public personna very much but I do wish he would stop with the “psycho babble” when he is trying to help the women on his show to feel better about themselves.
For some strange reason he has extended his normal “getting to know you” conversation with his subjects, which can’t be easy for them while they stand in their bra and pants, because Gok is not happy with the normal “So – Wendy, tell me how it is for you?” Noooooo, Gok wants to “know exactly what you are feeling; how this scar/fat/big boobs/small boobs issue is affecting you?”. One woman had the audacity to show how she coped, by joking with him “if you spend nine months in your pyjamas – you soon forgot how to dress”. It was a nice quip, it showed how she had dealt with things and it was her response but Gok, v-e-r-y s-e-r-i-o-u-s-l-y took her to task “No jokes! I want to know the real you!”. The poor woman looked shocked and duly admonished and so gave Gok the required tears and feelings of self-loathing that was required. The irony is that her joking was, no doubt, the real her, that was how she coped and she was telling Gok exactly that but there is no psychobabble to be created if someone has tried to cope and tries to look on the bright side but has just lost her way a bit. Nope – only a total dismantle of your personna will do for Gok because only Gok, it seems, can give you the confidence you need to build yourself up again (hmmm – he could transfer quite easily to the X Factor Judging Panel methinks). I do wish he would stop it – I’m sure lots of us would love one of those makeovers but couldn’t pay the emotional and psychological price required. Where has all the fun gone from make-overs?.
